What does the word ‘time’ mean to you?
I am currently studying Photography at GCSE level and have been given a project on ‘time’. This means i must take as many pictures to do with the word ‘time’ as possible. From just a simple clock ticking to a flower growing/dieing, the past, the present, the future, time travel, wallpaper being pealed back to reveal what lies beneath it – anything that involves the word ‘time’.
So, what does the word ‘time’ mean to you? when you think of the word ‘time’, what do you think of?
It doesn’t matter how insane, weird, dull or obvious your answers are because chances are i haven’t thought of them and they could turn out as some amazing pictures
The passage of time.
The difficult thing is how do you show the passage of time in one photograph.
A friend of mine took a wonderful picture of an old man sitting by himself in the old Cleveland Municipal Stadium where the Cleveland Indians played baseball years ago. At the time the stadium was no longer being used and was scheduled for demolition, so it was sitting vacant. My friend got permission to go inside where he saw this old man, sitting alone in the huge stadium, staring out at the field. In the one black-and-white photograph my friend took you could feel the years of baseball memories on the wrinkled, grizzled face of the old man.
I don’t know where you live, somewhere in the UK I’d guess, but I live near Chicago and I know the exact spot where I could take a picture of a traffic jam with a clock in the foreground.
I like the idea of peeling wallpaper, just like I like the idea of rusted cars and dilapidated buildings, but the problem with those is that your photos have to strongly suggest that these things were once something new.
Maybe I’m getting a bit too artsy. A picture of a wrist watch is fine, but a picture of that same watch on the wrinkled, liver-spotted wrist of an old person as the time approaches 12 O’Clock is a lot better. Similarly, a baby holding the watch with the time just after 12 O’Clock would be cool.
I hope I’ve given you a few ideas. Good luck!
