Dear reader,

Sometimes I get questions from my friends who have recently bought a digital SLR, if necessary, an external flash to "improve" especially for indoor photography. So I thought I would put some comments external flashes, which can really make a difference and take pictures from the Pop emphasizes the "high" flash photographs.

The "superior" equipment photo still have not integrated flash due to limitations Huge built-in flash can become an obstacle to its release also excellent picture quality. An external flash provides better and "more" control lighting and exposure of the subject in low light (even in light where you need the fill flash) situations. Here's why …

1. Power: It is increasingly clear that the remaining reasons, but it still tops the list. With the power of numbers flash (Guide 13/43 at ISO 100) becomes very difficult to light "shots" wide angle and therefore the edges of your photo is too dark. With the external flash can be obtained far the oldest of the illumination (guide number of 43/141 100 ISO). In addition, an external flash has its own set of batteries that could recycle more quickly, so the flash does not drain the batteries of the camera.

Note: It is important to understand that the actual distance from any Flash depends on openness and ISO. For example, at f / 8 and ISO 100, built-in flash is only effective if the subject is about 5 meters from the camera. Indirectly, the range can be increased by decreasing the f-stop and / or using high ISO settings. But both methods have a cost —

(i) less depth of field and

(ii) the increase in digital noise.

Even if a good external flash unit is approximately 15 times the power of an integrated unit, with nearly four times the effective distance (there are some mathematical at issue here). The power also becomes critical for bounce flash and fill flash in sunny conditions outdoors.

2. Flash back: Probably the most important side affects considerably the quality "of these photographs is the ability "rebound" to the flash on the subject through ceilings, walls or other objects. The flash drive has a future "snapshot" as the image you can not control the direction of high-flash memory. While an adjustable head bounced light of external flash can produce a beautiful picture does look not even "shine". The method produces soft shadows, a lighter background, and more natural results. Of course, in order to effectively rebound the light should flash powerful enough to "bounce" the light that illuminates the whole room.

3. Removing Red Eye: If you can always remove red eye caused by light reflected from the retina at the back of the eye through dilated pupils (when in the darkest areas in the interior) with post-processing tools such as Photoshop in the photo, it is always advisable take precautions when taking the picture itself. An external flash does a great job on this. Plus the flash is the goal, the probability of light from the flash to reflect directly on the retina into the lens. Also depends on the distance between the lens and eye. There is little geometry involved here, but the bottom line is greater distance between the flash and the lens, further from the camera can be placed on human subjects without causing redness of the eyes. Because you really can not control the position of the flash integrated with respect to the lens, an external flash is excellent solution.

4. Flash accessories (switches, supports and ancillary uses): They are "gifts" that can attach to your external flash to achieve better effects, such as "multipliers" that softens the harsh light of flash. Also maps index can be connected to produce certain effects, cat's eyes. Another type of switch is best Beamer narrow production and very powerful beams of Wildlife long-distance shot. Again, you can get Flash media to move the camera flashes on the target, reducing the risk of the effect red eyes, even less. Also Help with portrait (vertical shots) to reduce the shadow side. You can apply settings for wireless flash producing interesting studies, such as light sources for optimal directions. Some are lightning Focus Assist light that helps the system autofocus camera to work effectively in low light situations. You can also go for FP Flash (high speed sync) so you can still use the flash and high shutter speed. FP Flash is required if you use fill flash outdoors, but you want to use a wide aperture to blur the background and therefore have the shutter speed faster than sync speed. These small improvements can really make a difference when it comes to professional filming.

Flash What To Buy? It depends on factors compatibility and energy. If you have cameras Canon EOS series SLR, it is better to go for the 580EX if can afford. If not, the next best choice would 430EX (I have this model). If you have a digital SLR Nikon, the best solution would be to get SB600 (reasonable price). There are other alternatives like Sigma and Metz flash units available for Canon and Nikon digital SLRs.

Here’s my recommendations for selecting external flash units with pros and con and here is the link to the article entitled Do I need an external flash that has sample photos to illustrate the advantages of an external flash as we all as suggestion for further readings.
