Well, you need a camera, a decent camera that can take reasonable pictures if necessary. Note that the images should not be hi-res proofs or very broad. They will be available at 72dpi (the screen resolution) so you can exit with a picture not less than 500 x 500 pixels. Do not do what most people and set the camera on the highest setting, you only wasting valuable time during the handling of your images.

Then you need a tripod or camera support whatsoever. Ask any photographer what the reasonable quality of their images increased when they began using a tripod. The results speak themselves. You also need an imaging software, Photoshop and not necessarily, but you may need to resize and rework images. You should have something on your PC already. It's worth playing with the software and learn the basics. It will pay dividends later.

Moving quickly on the next item on your shopping list is a background. Like most eBayers experience I prefer to use a white background and isolate element. I think it makes the point stand out and look more professional. For this, I simply use a white sheet of card. If you shoot a lot of articles and a few large enough, then it would pay to invest in a sheet of white hardboard facing local timber merchants. This is easier to clean and keep clean.

Which brings me to lighting. Soft lighting and softer, the better. Good quality lighting software does not create hot spots burning any details.

You can go buy a studio flash and a tent light, which is nice if you can afford. However, I always used to use natural light. Natural light created by a cloudy sky. But you can get a light tent cheaply on eBay and I recommend you invest in one. Another thing to remember is that if you photograph in a tent the light you do not need to buy a background! Forget the lights if at least for now.

While at work … Clean carefully. I always use cotton gloves when I'm handling items. Place the light tent outside on a table or other surface. Carefully place the central element in the tent of light and position your camera. Take a few shots with settings noting different exposure settings used. You can find this information very helpful when I photograph points to the future.

Transfer the images on your PC and watch them on screen. With your editing software to resize images to 500 x 500 pixels and view them at 72dpi. Increasing the brightness of about 20. This should give a detailed image on a pure white background. If there are marks on the white background you can then remove the software. If the article has lost all detail to play with the brightness and contrast until you are satisfied with the final image.

When you are satisfied with the results – save the image in a selected folder on your computer. You are now ready to transfer a picture on the auction site.
